Gettysburg, PA – The 158th Anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg will bring several authors to the Gettysburg Heritage Center for presentations and book signings. Notable authors, such as Dr. Bradley Gottfried, Tom McMillan, Kent Masterson Brown, Jim Hessler, Jared Frederick & Erik Dorr will be among those in attendance. Book talks followed by signings will take place Friday, July 2nd. Additional book signings will take place throughout the July 1-6, 2021, Anniversary weekend. Many of the authors attending have newly released books, and this will be one of the first opportunities for guests to purchase a copy and get it personalized by the author. Tom McMillan’s book, “Armistead and Hancock: Behind the Gettysburg Legend of Two Friends at the Turning Point of the Civil War”, is due to be released on July 15th, but copies will be available at the Heritage Center. In this deeply researched book, Tom sets the record straight. In a war of brother versus brother, theirs has become the most famous broken friendship: Union general Winfield Scott Hancock and Confederate general Lewis Armistead. Even if their relationship was not as close as the legend has it, Hancock and Armistead knew each other well before the Civil War. Newly released, “Meade at Gettysburg: A Study in Command”, by Kent Masterson Brown, looks at Meade’s leadership during the Battle, and highlights how Meade's rapid advance of the army to Gettysburg on July 1, his tactical control and coordination of the army in the desperate fighting on July 2, and his determination to hold his positions on July 3 insured victory. Book talks will take place on Friday, July 2nd beginning at 2 pm. Presentations will take place each hour until 6 pm with signings following immediately after each presentation. CSPAN will cover the talks and will air at a later date. All book presentations are free an open to the public, and due to limited capacity, seating is on a first come, first serve basis. Participate in Civil War History through Military Drill, Encampments and Music GETTYSBURG, PA – The Federal Volunteer Brigade will hold its first-ever recruitment event on June 8 & 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Gettysburg Heritage Center located at 297 Steinwehr Avenue in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Brigade will have an encampment at the Gettysburg Heritage Center with a weekend of drill and living history to show potential recruits the lifestyle and duties of the many different roles of a re-enactor. The Brigade is actively engaged in filling the ranks of First and Second Infantry Regiments, First Cavalry Regiment of the Potomac, Medical Department, Engineers, Provost Marshal and the Calvert Arms Fife and Drum Corps. The general public also is invited to come and meet the re-enactors, learn about the uniforms, accoutrements and weapons used during the Civil War. “The Federal Volunteer Brigade is recruiting patriots throughout the Mid-Atlantic region to answer the call of their country,” said Brigadier General J. Henson. “Come do your part to keep our history alive with whatever skill you bring from infantry and cavalry to medical or music. We can connect you with one of the nearly 20 companies that come from Virginia and Maryland to Delaware and Pennsylvania, who are seeking new re-enactors to join their ranks.” All able-bodied volunteers are needed. This enlistment will be accepted for a term of “three years or until the war ends.” The Federal Volunteer Brigade will have members of many of the Brigade companies at the recruitment. Re-enactors from the companies will be available to answer questions about what it takes to become a Civil War re-enactor. The Brigade will host talks about a variety of re-enactor roles and experiences. In addition, there will be demonstrations of the Manual of Arms and military drill experienced years ago by the troops during the actual conflict. As part of the Civil War encampment, potential recruits and the public will be able to learn about soldier’s lives during the war, the uniforms, accoutrements and weapons used during the period. The Federal Volunteer Brigade was formed as a living memorial, to provide living historians a means to honor the men, who fought to preserve the Union during the War of the Rebellion from 1861 through 1865, and the women and families who supported them. The Brigade was formed in July 2008, after the 145th Gettysburg event. The Federal Volunteer Brigade members pledge to strive to accurately portray the lifestyle of the period, with honor, dignity and respect to themselves, each other and to the memory of those we represent. The new Gettysburg Heritage Center, formerly the American Civil War Wax Museum, will open its doors to the community December 20 – 31 for a free preview. The Gettysburg Heritage Center has undergone major renovations throughout the year, and is eager to show local residents the transformation. The new facility offers visitors a different perspective of the town of Gettysburg through the eyes of the civilians that lived during the three-day battle.
Upon entering the Heritage Center, visitors will find it open and welcoming. Small town facades, such as a train station, general store, and a theater marquee greet guests. The exhibit space takes visitors back to the town of Gettysburg on the eve of the battle, highlighting daily life for those who called it home. The reality of war, and the aftermath of the battle come to life with the use of 3-D programming and authentic displays, including the hearse that transported President Lincoln in Washington D.C. after his death. Interactive displays, and historical artifacts and documents will be added in the spring of 2015 to enhance the experience. The tour concludes with the Civil War Trust’s award-winning Battle of Gettysburg: Animated Map; a high-definition, 20-minute movie that gives an excellent overview of the three day battle. “Those who have seen our new exhibit often comment that there is nothing else like it,” explains Gettysburg Heritage Center President Tammy Myers. “Visitors will learn about the town, the people, and hear their stories”. Renovations to the facility began in January 2014, bringing together several members of the community and local businesses. Early in the developmental phase, Main Street Gettysburg facilitated the strategic planning process for the property. Sharrah Design Group of Gettysburg oversaw the project, with much of the work being done by local contractors such as Mark Austin Building and Remodeling, Ketterman Electric, A/V Solutions, Graphcom, Licensed Battlefield Guide Tim Smith, Licensed Town Guide Joanne Lewis, and graphic artist Steven Stanley to name a few. The Civil War Trust, the Center of Civil War photography and the Adams County Historical Society also collaborated in the creation of the new exhibit. “What makes the Heritage Center unique is that we’re not doing this alone,” explains Myers. “We’re not a museum or exhibit design firm, but by collaborating with the right people, we’ve created an experience that is engaging, educational, and entertaining.” The community preview is open to the public. Residents are invited to bring family and friends to tour the exhibit. Hours of operation are daily, 9 am – 5 pm with the last entrance time at 4:15 pm. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve operating hours are 9 am – 1 pm with the last entrance at 12:15 pm. The Heritage Center is closed Christmas Day. The Gettysburg Heritage Center is located at 297 Steinwehr Ave., Gettysburg, PA 17325. Visit www.GettysburgMuseum.com for more information, or call 717-334-6245. Gettysburg, PA – Auctions are very common; however a wax museum auction is a once in a lifetime event. The Gettysburg Heritage Center, formerly the American Civil War Wax Museum, is preparing to auction off the contents of its museum on March 15 beginning at 9 am. Now under new ownership, the museum will refocus its storyline to that of the town before, during and after the battle. The auction will allow the museum to re-develop the space, updating it and making it relevant to all visitors.
The auction will include approximately 95 life-sized museum figures; nevertheless, they are not the sole items up for sale. The props used to create the 52 year old vignettes, such as antique furniture, light fixtures, backdrops and scenery, old books, oil paintings and some store displays are also scheduled to be sold. “Not everyone is looking to purchase a wax figure,” states museum president Tammy Myers. “We feel the auction will appeal to a diverse audience including theater groups, both community and professional; antique collectors; and those who would like to own a piece of Gettysburg history.” There will be three opportunities for the public to preview the items for sale prior to the auction. Wednesday, March 12 from noon till 5 pm, Thursday, March 13 from 4 pm till 8 pm, and Friday, March 14 from noon till 5 pm. The auction will be conducted by PA Onsite Auction Co., on Saturday, March 15 beginning at 9 am sharp. The snow date will be Sunday, March 16. To view the catalog, visit www.paonsiteauctionco.com. The Gettysburg Heritage Center will begin working on the new gallery immediately following the on-site auction. It is expected to open sometime in June. Renovations to the gift shop and theater are currently underway, and are expected to open to the public in mid-April. The Gettysburg Heritage Center is located at 297 Steinwehr Ave., Gettysburg, PA 17325. Visit online at www.GettysburgMuseum.com, or on Facebook at Gettysburg Heritage Center. |
