Gettysburg Gift Center to Host Artist Special Event!

(Gettysburg, PA) - 6/27/2009

Gettysburg, PA – History and art converge at the Gettysburg Gift Center complex during the annual 4th of July celebration! A total of five artists will be making special appearances at the Gift Center to promote new releases and future projects.

Veteran, historian and sculptor Andrew Chernak will be unveiling his latest sculpture of a 20 lb Parrott cannon during his scheduled appearance at the Gift Center. It is the 8th cannon in his “Hear the Cannons Roar” series. This is Chernak’s first release since the summer of 2007. Over the past two years Chernak has been working on commissioned projects such as the Gold Star Mother’s Memorial that will be placed in our nation’s capital.

Renowned Civil War sculptor Francis Barnum will be making a special appearance in Gettysburg to promote his most recent release, “General Robert E. Lee”, a bust of the famous southern general. Barnum, who has been creating Civil War pewter sculptures for over 25 years, will be available to talk to visitors about his work and new projects in the future.

George Funt, artillerist, crafts-man, and pattern maker will be on hand to talk to visitors about his 1/8th scale replica cannons. Each cannon is hand-made by Funt in Pennsylvania. Funt has reproduced popular cannons such as the Whitworth and Napoleon along with “Jackson’s Disciples”, a set of four cannons from the battle of New Market. In addition to the smaller scale cannons, Funt produces ½ scale and full scale cannons.

Jewelry makers Lucy Cadwallader and Rebecca Marie Schmehl will also be in attendance showcasing their work. Lucy is widely recognized for her Victorian hair jewelry where she uses human or horsehair to produce almost any type of jewelry. Rebecca Marie Schmehl creates Victorian jewelry using antique settings and stones. Both ladies are able to design custom orders. Lucy will be demonstrating her work while at the Gift Center.
